"The Gates" was officially unveiled today in New York's Central Park. It's the latest large-scale installation from
Christo, the Bulgarian artist famous for miles-long fabric fences, forests of giant umbrellas, and wrapping entire buildings in cloth.
It consists of 7,500 square archways, each with a billowing curtain hanging from the crossbar, and all in a brilliant shade of orange:
The New York Times reports that Christo had been planning The Gates for almost 25 years, but only recently received the necessary permits. What a lovely, symbolic coincidence that its debut should fall so close to the
successful conclusion of Ukraine's
Orange Revolution:
