Big Ben In Motorcycle Crash
Police were called to the scene of a motorcycle accident near the Armstrong Tunnel on Monday morning.
For someone who lives in Japan, Big Ben sure gets around.

Actually, it turns out it wasn't Riding Sun commenter Big Ben in that crash, but Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Luckily, Roethlisberger wasn't seriously injured.

FOLLOW-UP:
Well, I guess that depends on your definition of "seriously". Via the Kneeslider, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports:
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of surgery Monday to repair multiple facial fractures suffered in a motorcycle crash in Uptown earlier in the day.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition last night in Mercy Hospital, Uptown, said Dr. Harry Sell Jr., chairman of the hospital's department of surgery. Sell said the four surgeons who operated on Roethlisberger termed the surgery a success.

...Physicians would not describe most of the injuries at the request of Roethlisberger's family, but city police said he lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch cut on the back of his head and a broken jaw, and injured both knees.
Ouchouchouch. A helmet might have minimized the facial fractures, but Roethlisberger wasn't wearing one. True, the accident doesn't appear to have been his fault, since the car driver made a left turn across his path — the classic car-motorcycle crash scenario. But the laws of physics work just the same in a crash no matter whose fault it was.

I just glimpsed the NYT's headline and did a double-take; I see you already updated. Face-first into a car doesn't sound very fun.

I'm sure you and Ben are careful, but it's hard to have any control over what others on the road may do.

It's my opinin that we are just not very good at evaluating risks for which we are not evolved, even though risk-taking is an evolved male behavior.

Exactly right, which is why you should leave yourself a margin of error for reacting to other people doing stupid things. (Roethlisberger didn't crash because he lost control or spun out, or because his bike broke down. He crashed because he didn't leave himself enough time to avoid an oncoming driver stupidly turning across his path.)

It's not always possible to do this 100%, but you can try. And helmets can help a lot in those few times when you really can't avoid a crash; Roethlisberger wasn't wearing one.
