Enough of the Middle East. Via Undercover in Japan, TV in Japan found a show that settles another age-old debate. Namely, who's better at trampoline-jumping: guys in leopard costumes with fake boobs, or guys in baby-blue policeman outfits with vinyl diapers?

Actually, neither of them is very good at it.

Ya know, I watch clips like this and of some of the Japanese shows ported over to America, I've watched anime and played some video games with a Japanese bent... and I can safely say that I will never understand what's going through the Japanese mind when it comes to entertainment. While I find some or even most of it highly amusing and/or creative, I can't help but think, "How in the world did they come up with this?"

Are they jumping into a pool of battery acid? And what's with the bowls of ice they are wiping all over themselves when they jump out of the pool?

I would actually watch something like this "if it were on American TV. "Jackass" is in the same vein, isn't it? And I think that's a whole lot funnier and more creative than yet another knock-off of "Friends", which I could never stand anyway.

The water is painfully hot. The ice is there to cool them down.

Now that is twisted.

Wasn't there some Japanese gameshow where the host ladeled boiling-hot water onto women in bathing suits or something? You really need to do a post explaining this kind of thing. YouTube is rife with examples.

There is a longstanding tradition of Japanese game shows that submit contestants to treatment that would make the Abu Ghraib guards cringe. I believe this genre was the inspiration for America's "Fear Factor".

Japanese Gameshow Host: "Your shows reward knowledge; we punish ignorance."

Homer: "Ignor-what?" (flames shoot from his microphone)
