The Associated Press reports on the latest horror to emerge from America's Guantanamo Bay detention facility:
Fueled by a high-calorie diet, detainees at Guantanamo Bay are becoming fat.

Most of the prisoners arrived at the military prison in southeast Cuba slightly underweight but have since gained an average of 20 pounds (9 kilograms), and most are now "normal to mildly overweight or mildly obese," Navy Cmdr. Robert Durand, spokesman for the detention facilities, said Monday.

...Durand said detainees are served a wide variety of food and expected to choose what appeals to them.

"The detainees are advised that they are offered more food than necessary to provide choice and variety, and that consuming all the food they are offered will result in weight gain," he said.
The article says each detainee is offered food containing up to 4,200 calories every day. But the San Francisco Chronicle previously reported that three MRE's ("Meals Ready to Eat"), a typical daily food ration for US troops in the field, contain just 3,750 calories. So American military prisoners eat better than American troops. In this case, the irony truly is delicious.

So if the soldiers went on hunger strikes, demanded special meals like the demands made for Halal comestibles, etc., then they would perhaps get the caloric equivalent of Sheik Abdel Rahman's daily degustacion?

Fighting for a country that feeds its terrorist swine better than you? Our soldiers must indeed be saints.
